Introducing nuSIM, the integrated SIM (iSIM) solution for the nRF91 Series.  nuSIM integrates the SIM directly into the nRF91, eliminating the need a physical SIM card. SIM credentials are securely managed in the device’s protected area, reducing device size and boosting durability. As an open standard, nuSIM includes digital remote provisioning that streamlines your supply chain through a fully digital process that delivers SIM data already during manufacturing.

How nuSIM Works

nuSIM is a dedicated software solution that operates within the secure Arm TrustZone® of the application processor on nRF91 Series System-in-Package (SiP) modules.

Integration Steps

Integrating nuSIM into your product is a one-time process using the nRF Connect SDK. Once integrated, the typical factory provisioning workflow for each device is as follows:

1. Firmware Flashing: Load your firmware—now including the nuSIM library—onto the nRF91 SiP module.
2. nuSIM Initialization: Using a specialized software tool, each device is prepared to securely receive SIM data (referred to as the "nuSIM profile").
3. nuSIM Profile Loading: The same tool then connects to your selected network operator to securely download and install the a unique nuSIM profile in each device.

Once these steps are complete, your devices are ready for cellular connection.

The nRF91 Series supports Software SIM, securely running on the application processor, with Onomondo as the first partner with their SoftSIM solution. This innovative technology brings numerous benefits, including cost savings by reducing SIM and bill-of-materials (BoM) expenses, simplifying the design process, and lowering power consumption.

With SoftSIM, the need for physical SIM cards and SIM sockets is eliminated, resulting in a streamlined and compact end-product design.
