nRF9151 SMA DK Development kit

Development kit for LTE-M, NB-IoT, NTN, GNSS and DECT NR+

The nRF9151 SMA DK is a single-board development kit for the nRF9151 SiP, designed specifically for developers who require maximum performance and flexibility. It replaces internal antennas with SMA connectors for LTE-M/NB-IoT/NTN/DECT NR+ and GNSS, enabling direct connection to lab equipment or high-performance external antennas. This makes it the ideal platform for precise RF characterization, power measurements, and demanding field testing of applications using LTE-M, NB-IoT, NB-NTN, DECT NR+, and GNSS.

Key Features:

  • Maximum RF Flexibility: Dedicated SMA connectors for LTE/NTN/NR+ and GNSS enable conducted measurements with lab equipment or connection of external antennas for optimized field test performance. (Antennas included with the kit for NTN/LTE-M/NB-IoT and GNSS)
  • Comprehensive Connectivity: Powered by the nRF9151 SiP, the kit supports NTN, LTE-M, NB-IoT, DECT NR+, and GNSS. It is the recommended kit for developing and evaluating direct-to-satellite solutions.
  • Flexible SIM Technology: Features both a nano/4FF SIM card slot and an MFF2 SIM footprint, providing support for traditional plug-in SIMs as well as soldered eSIMs or software iSIMs. (SIMs supporting terrestrial and NTN is included with the kit)
  • Extensive Prototyping Options: Full access to all GPIOs and interfaces is available via connectors. Arduino Uno Rev3 compatibility enables easy integration with a wide range of third-party shields, including the nRF7002 EK for adding Wi-Fi locationing capabilities.
  • On-Board Debugging: An integrated SEGGER J-Link debugger allows for programming and debugging the onboard nRF9151 SiP and can also be used to program and debug external targets.
  • User Interface: Includes four user-programmable LEDs and four buttons for direct user interaction and status indication without additional hardware.

1.0.0-1.alpha nRF91 firmware binaries

Changelog:

1.0.0-1.alpha nRF91 firmware binaries

NOTE: This firmware is only for evaluation purposes and not for production.

This release supports: nRF9151 LACA A1 SiP and the nRF9151 SMA DK

This release does not support nRF9160, nRF9161, or nRF9131 SiP modules.

Highlights:

First alpha release of the nRF9151 NTN modem firmware, introducing experimental support for Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) alongside LTE-M, NB-IoT, and GNSS.

  • Added support for 3GPP Release 17 NB-IoT Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) operation on bands 23, 255, and 256
  • Introduced AT%SKYLO to configure Skylo network-specific requirements
  • Added support for reading System Information Blocks (SIBs) via AT%SIBREQ and AT%SIBCONFIG, enabling application-side implementation of NTN discontinuous coverage handling
  • Added improved Radio Link Failure (RLF) control for NTN-NB-IoT to optimize power consumption using backoff timers
  • Added support for non-blocking send data transmission with timeout and notification options
  • Added support for TLS maximum fragment length negotiation extension for DTLS (512 and 1024 bytes)
  • Enhanced +CEREG notifications to include specific out-of-service detection (status 91)
  • Added a power-saving safeguard to prevent staying connected to cells without usable connectivity; configurable via AT%FEACONF
  • Added RSRQ parameter to the AT%XMONITOR command
  • Added APDU trace support in the public trace database

A complete list of new functionality, changes and bug fixes is in the release notes found here or inside the .zip file.

This release is aligned with v0.7 of the mfw_nrf9151-ntn AT Commands Reference Guide.

Some of the new features requires support also from the nRF Connect SDK, and it is recommended to ensure compatibility with the appropriate version of the SDK, which is nRF Connect SDK v3.2.0.

When using this alpha NTN modem firmware, we recommend starting with either of this two options:

  • The 'Serial Modem application' (modem only apporach, AT commands)
  • 'Asset Tracker Template' configured for satellite connectivity. Note: To ensure NTN support is correctly implemented, please refer to our dedicated 'NTN use case doc' and ''NTN and TN use case doc', as the standard template is not configured for NTN by default.

It is advisable to use the latest version of nRF Connect for Desktop and nRF Connect Programmer tools.
