Low power wireless connectivity solutions for smart home
Environmental intelligence company, Sensereo, has unveiled a Nordic Semiconductor-powered Matter over Thread smart smoke alarm, providing peace of mind for homeowners, even if they are away from home. The ‘MS-1’ smart smoke detector employs Nordic’s multiprotocol nRF52840 SoC to provide the Matter over Thread wireless connectivity, enabling the smoke detector to work seamlessly across all leading smart home platforms, including Apple Home, Samsung SmartThings, Homey, and Home Assistant.
Certified to Matter, Thread and EN 14604 standards, the MS-1 is one of the first commercially available smoke detectors to support Matter over Thread natively, rather than through proprietary bridges or Wi-Fi stacks. Nordic’s nRF52840 SoC is ideal for developing products for a Matter connected home, using Thread connectivity for transport and Bluetooth® LE connectivity for commissioning new devices to a network.
“We chose Matter over Thread for the MS-1 because it aligns with the fundamental requirements of life-safety devices—low power consumption, high reliability and resilience, local operation without cloud dependency, and long product lifespan,” says Roy Chen, Founder & CEO, Sensereo. “We chose Nordic because of the nRF52840 SoC’s proven track record in certified, long lifecycle products. It offers excellent low power performance and strong radio sensitivity and reliability for Thread networking, and the Arm Cortex-M4 CPU is well suited to real time, safety critical applications.”
MS-1’s sensing architecture prioritizes stability and consistency over time, which is critical for safety-certified products. It employs a photoelectric smoke sensor for early detection of smouldering fires, as well as internal temperature and system monitoring sensors used for self-diagnostics, fault detection, and long-term reliability tracking. When smoke is detected, the device triggers a high-volume local alarm while simultaneously sending alerts to the user’s smart-home ecosystem via the nRF52840 SoC’s Matter over Thread connectivity. This enables both local and remote alerts in the event the homeowner is not on the premises.
The smart smoke detector is also the world's first Matter over Thread smoke alarm with a unique dual-battery system that keeps core safety functions isolated from smart safety features. A sealed long life battery dedicated to core smoke detection provides up to seven years of battery life, while a user-replaceable CR123A battery for connectivity typically provides between two and three years of battery life before replacement. This ensures protection never stops, even when smart features go offline. The ultra-low power consumption of Nordic’s nRF52840 was a critical factor in SoC selection, as the MS-1 is designed for multi-year unattended operation while maintaining always-on connectivity.
“The stability and predictability of Nordic’s solutions significantly reduced risk during regulatory testing,” continues Chen. “The nRF52840 SoC’s reliable radio performance, and mature software ecosystem helped ensure consistency across EMC, RF, and functional safety testing, which is critical for EN14604 certification.”
In addition to MS-1, Sensereo has recently introduced ‘MSC-1’, the world’s first Matter-over-Thread combined smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, also built on the same Nordic hardware and Matter-over-Thread architecture. MSC-1 integrates two regulated life-safety functions into a single device while maintaining low power consumption and long-term reliability.
